Lockdown 2.0

So it begins, Lockdown 2.0 started today and unlike last time we are on our own as the Smallest Boy has moved into the flat in London and Alex is back at University in Bristol. So far it’s been fine, however it has only been 18 hours and we were asleep for most of those or Robert was out! We have already discussed potential areas of contention which include my lack of enthusiasm for Fantasy Football and Police Interceptors. I think we’ll be OK, as long as I stretch out the list of domestic chores I have up my sleeve over the entire 4 weeks, rather than expecting them all to be completed this weekend.

The clocks changing and the gyms closing mean I have to squeeze my exercise into the daylight hours, which from Monday – Friday means lunchtime walks or bike rides. Today’s march round the woods was lovely, but I have discovered a downside to winter bike rides – a muddy behind. There is also the worry of slippery roads and poor visibility, so some bike lights have been purchased, together with a reflective jacket you can probably spot from the Moon, and I am now just waiting for perfect weather conditions. In the meantime the wellies and my new red waterproof are getting lots of use.

Oh no! A dirty bottom!

It would be easier if we were based in a town with street lights, but being rural dwellers, the option of road running after dark (not that I run any more, but apparently you can walk in the dark too) is just not available. Well, not unless you are prepared to risk life & limb, and let’s be honest my exercise motivation fall to zero when faced with the choice between a comfy chair in front of the wood burner or a couple of miles outdoors in the cold and dark. In addition, there’s no view after dark, so all I am left with are my thoughts and sadly I lack the depth to sustain that for any length of time, so daylight and and a lunchtime dash it is.

Up the road and into the woods
They’re called Copper Beech for a reason

I have been recruiting exercise buddies like a mad woman and have walks lined up with a number of friends over the next 4 weeks. A combination of walking, talking, takeaway coffee and cake – what more do you need to maintain sanity in a these crazy times.
